Windsor wedding videography Perfect Shutter Videography featured in Windsors Biz X Magazine !

The Perfect Shutter Team in Biz X magazine

Earlier this year, the Perfect Shutter videography team was featured by Biz X magazine in a special article on Windsor wedding videography. The story was published in the January issue of the popular local business magazine, just in time for the Wedding Extravaganza. Grab a copy and see our handsome faces featured on page 43! Special thanks to Michael Niziolek from Biz X, for the interview and the awesome article.

Here’s a transcript of the interview:

First just talk a little bit about the history of the company (when it started, how it got started, experience level and so forth)…

Perfect Shutter was started in the summer of 2009. The three of us are all longtime photography hobbyists who happened to start dabbling in videography. We all enjoyed it so much, that we decided to start Perfect Shutter and offer wedding videography. 2010 was our first full year in business, but our style really caught on and we’ve already filmed 19 weddings.

What services do you offer to Windsor area residents? (Can people from the Detroit area/suburbs hire you?)

Our main focus is wedding videography. As well, we do some commercial videography (mostly for web, and one commercial which has appeared on Cogeco Cable). We are available to work in Detroit. We have a strategic partner in Michigan that we work through/with, and we’re looking to grow in that market. We have also filmed numerous weddings across Ontario including Hamilton and the Niagara area.

What kind of equipment do you have?

We’re part of the new generation of HDSLR film-makers. Our equipment bag includes two Canon 5D Mark II’s, and two Canon 7D’s. We love these cameras because they capture beautiful HD footage, with the “movie look” of film. As well, the cameras are small and unobtrusive, so as not to disturb the couple and guests. Also, the small form factor allows us to get candid shots and unique angles not possible with big, bulky cameras. In addition, we have a full set of cinematic video gear including wireless sound equipment, dollies, a slider and a Steadicam.

How do you approach different events like a wedding or party…do you have a unique personality or style?

Our style is modern and cinematic. It’s our contemporary, story-telling ability that really sets us apart. We capture the day’s events candidly and creatively. We film genuine moments as they happen naturally, with emphasis on the details that make each couple unique. Then, through careful sequencing and editing, we produce a story-telling video that’s modern, stylish, and powerful.

As for our personalities, we’re just fun-loving, creative people. We love meeting couples and hearing their stories. We love the technology behind what we do and we’re always continuing to educate ourselves. We love working in the wedding industry and networking with other talented entrepreneurs in Windsor. And of course, we love weddings.

I know you can’t give exact details on pricing, every event is different, but what can clients expect? Are DVDs included in pricing? Is there cost for travel? Do the get raw footage?

Our video packages start at $1900 and all include a cinematic highlight video that the couple can share with all their friends and family on Facebook, or via e-mail. In addition, our couples can include fully-edited coverage of preparations, the ceremony, the creative photo session and the reception. We don’t offer raw footage, because we film in the cinematic style; we don’t just set up a camera and let it roll. Rather, we emphasize quality over quantity. Depending on the package though, couples can expect a fully edited DVD up to three hours in length. Three DVD’s are included, in leather bound keepsake cases. For the coming year, we also expect to be authoring to high definition BluRay.

We have filmed weddings in Michigan, Hamilton and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Travel fees are very modest, because we simply love traveling and filming different and interesting locations.

Is there one or two things you think that customers should keep in mind when hiring a videographer?

Find a videographer that has a solid portfolio and watch their samples. Choose one whose style matches what you picture for your wedding day. As well, ask your photographer for a recommendation. They’ve probably worked alongside many videographers and can help you choose the one that is right for you.

Anything you’d like to add?

The videography studio is only one half of Perfect Shutter; we also offer a photobooth rental service. We have photobooths operating in Windsor and Toronto and we can travel to service all of Ontario.

We’re currently renovating a studio space for photography and videography. The Perfect Shutter Studio will be open in early 2011, for our portrait and commercial work. It’s a store-font near the University, that will be half modern, and half funky & vintage, depending on the type of shoot required. We’re looking forward to it!

A Year of Wedding Videography | A 2010 Recap

November 19th, 2010
Windsor wedding personal A Year of Wedding Videography | A 2010 Recap

John Chan | Perfect Shutter

Just this past weekend, the Perfect Shutter cinematography team filmed our last wedding video for the 2010 season. Looking back on this first year in business, all I can say is wow. It’s been an amazing journey, starting Perfect Shutter from scratch and growing it into the business it is today. Establishing this company, and developing our videography style has been such an awesome learning process. Meeting and working alongside other industry professionals has been a fun and invaluable experience. But most of all, getting to know our awesome brides and grooms, and working hard to tell their beautiful stories through video, has been such an honour and pleasure.

At this time back in 2009, I was filming just my second wedding… by myself… with a camera borrowed from a friend. It’s amazing to think that we’ve now filmed 16 weddings in our first year in business. And now, going on our second year, we’re receiving inquiries from brides & grooms in Montreal, Toronto, Chicago and New York, asking us to film their weddings. It’s been an adventure!

We didn’t do this all by ourselves though. We’ve had so much support from our families, from our friends in the industry, and even our Facebook fans. I’d like to take some time to give a sincere and massive thank you to some of the people who have helped us along the way. Especially to our amazing photographer friends who we’ve worked alongside. It’s humbling to know that we have so many talented photographic artists out there, who love what we do and actively recommend us to their own couples. Thank you for entrusting us with your clients and supporting Perfect Shutter. It means so much to us!

In no particular order, a big thank you goes out to…

Sincere apologies if I forgot anyone! Send me a message and I’ll include you. You deserve it!

* * * * *

Also, I need to give credit to some of the talented people who have filmed with us, and helped us tell these love stories. Thanks to Hash Triki, Jana Kendrick and Nadya Ekler. You’re all super-talented, and I hope that we can work together again in the future.

Now… I’d also like to send a personal message to my video teammates here at Perfect Shutter. Herman, Samson and Brian. I couldn’t have asked for a better team to work with. We each brought different backgrounds, ideas and skills to this team. But through hard work, we’ve built a cool business (and had so much fun doing it!). I’m constantly impressed by everyone’s knowledge, abilities and dedication. Cheers to a great first year!

To our brides and grooms. Thank you for choosing Perfect Shutter as your videographer. Thank you for trusting us to capture the most important day of your lives. On your wedding day, we spend the day beside you, we laugh with your families, and we share dinner with your friends. By the end of it all, we end up learning so much about our couples and the love they share. We feel a unique connection with each of our brides and grooms. Thank you for letting us tell your story.

To our future brides and grooms, for 2011 and beyond. We’re so excited to film your wedding and tell your story! We’ve already met some really interesting and enthusiastic couples. Best of luck with the rest of your planning! Thanks for choosing Perfect Shutter for your videography, and we’ll see you on your big day!

There’s still so much more to say, but I’ll save it for another blog. Also, I haven’t even touched on the photobooth side of Perfect Shutter; I’ll let Samson or Herman take care of that. Thanks for reading! For now… I’d better get back to editing!

-John

THE PINK RIBBON FASHION SHOW | VIDEOGRAPHY

August 29th, 2010

Windsor wedding personal THE PINK RIBBON FASHION SHOW | VIDEOGRAPHY

Sew Stylish is another terrific organization here in Windsor that Perfect Shutter is proud to work with, by offering our photography and event videography services.  This group of friends have come together to volunteer their time and effort into organizing what turned out to be a wildly-successful charity fashion show.  This year’s “Pink Ribbon Fashion Show” was a smash hit, selling out their venue and raising over $8000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The fashion show consisted of all original pieces created by local clothing designer Dalena Nguyen.  Dinner was provided by the Serbian Centre and there were numerous musical and dance acts for entertainment throughout the night.

I got involved with Sew Stylish through my friend Jemmy Nguyen, who asked me if I could lend a hand with the show.  Throughout the several months of planning, I was able to help out with several model/fashion/promo photoshoots (the photos will be posted in the next blog!).  As well, on the night of the big event, I took on videography duties, capturing the fashion show in its entirety and the various performances throughout the evening.

Here is a short teaser, showing you a little bit of what went on that night.  A longer highlight video with a more detailed blog is soon to follow.  This is just a taste!

Congratulations to Jemmy & Dalena and all the organizers, models and volunteers for putting on such a successful event!  Thanks too, to all the attendees who made it out to support such an awesome cause. Looking forward to next year’s show!

-John

Our friends at Windsor Dance eXperience | Photography

August 16th, 2010

Special events photography for Windsor Dance eXperience

Windsor Dance eXperience Inc. is a local dance theatre company that I’m honoured to work with for their special events photography. It’s a non-profit organization run by volunteers, encouraging youth throughout the community to develop an appreciation for the fine arts. This terrific group organizes and performs up to four major productions annually, at Windsor’s Capitol Theatre and other locations across the city. In their seven years of operation, Windsor Dance eXperience Inc. has worked with such organizations as the Windsor Fringe Festival, The Windsor Symphony Orchestra and numerous elementary schools around the city. WDX is truly a shining star in Windsor`s arts landscape, and I applaud them for their hard work in creating a genuine dance theatre experience for their members and for the community.

I`ve gotten to know the organization through my longtime friends, Julia Galli and Tiffany Wentzell, who are President and Artistic Director of WDX, respectively.  They`ve entrusted me to take on the photography duties for their company and labour of love.  So, throughout the past year I`ve been doing headshots for their members, and photographing their performances. When I first watched a WDX show, I was blown away. I was amazed by the incredible talent exhibited by the dancers, some of whom are as young as 6 years old. The choreography is fantastic, and the elaborate sets and stunning costumes are all created in-house. It’s so impressive. The cast, crew and board of WDX really pour their hearts into this company and every single performance, and it really shows. It`s so encouraging to see this calibre of talent here in Windsor.

WDX has an upcoming show at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, August 21st at 7:00pm.

The show is entitled “Spectrum” and will feature works by their newer and younger choreographers. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $12 at the door. I encourage you all to check it out!  They really do put on a great show.

For more information about the company, upcoming shows and membership, you can visit the WDX website at www.wdxtheatre.ca.

Here are some photos that we’ve done for WDX!  Studio shots were done in collaboration with our friend Jason Meghie.

Windsor Detroit Target Fireworks 2010 | Event Photography

August 6th, 2010

Windsor wedding personal Windsor Detroit Target Fireworks 2010 | Event PhotographyIf you’re from the Windsor, Detroit and Essex County area, you’ve probably witnessed the annual Target Fireworks at some point in your life. This year, the summer staple fell on June 21st, celebrating its 52nd annual show. The Fireworks show is choreographed by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale, and is one of the most spectacular and largest fireworks displays in the world. Over 10,000 pyrotechnic effects are fired from three barges afloat on the Detroit River, and light up the international skyline shared by Windsor and Detroit.

The fireworks show coincides with Windsor’s Summer Fest, a 19-day carnival that takes place along the riverfront. Growing up in Windsor, the Summer Fest and fireworks have always been a big part of life in this city. Now that I’m raising my own family here, I’m thankful for all the great festivals and celebrations that this area has to offer. It seems like every weekend, there’s some sort of event going on somewhere in the city. It’s one thing that I really love about living here in Windsor.

As usual, I took my daughter down to the river to watch the show. With my camera, tripod and a remote shutter release in hand, we made our way downtown. It’s a great being able to enjoy this awesome tradition shared by thousands of families, and tourists every year. Here are some photos from this year’s fireworks show!

John’s First Perfect Shutter blog post!

August 4th, 2010
Windsor wedding personal Johns First Perfect Shutter blog post!

John | Windsor Ontario Wedding Cinematography

Welcome to my personal blog, here on PerfectShutter.com…   pleased to meet you!

I’m John Chan, one of the co-founders of the Perfect Shutter Videography Studio.   If you’re one of the lucky couples who have selected Perfect Shutter for your wedding videography, chances are, I’ll be a part of the video team capturing your special day.

This blog is a way for me to share a little more about myself.  Here, I’ll blog about some of the events that happen in and around Windsor and Essex County.  As well, I’ll be sharing photos from some of my own creative and personal projects, unrelated to our wedding and commercial work.  There will be posts about local festivals, break-dancing competitions and automotive photography.  Just a few of the things I love and that I’m involved in.

Enjoy!

Here I am… hard at work, filming Brynn and Sammy’s wedding.  As you can see, even when hard at work, I’m wearing a goofy grin, haha.  Photo by the talented Arica Ingratta-Klassen.  Check out her work at www.manifestophotography.com !
